Did Esau Bite Jacob?
Scribal Dots

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

There is a teaching going around Messianic Jewish circles that expounds upon an erroneous interpretation of the scribal dots over the word kiss in the Hebrew text of Genesis 33:4. It states that these dots mean that Esau bit Jacob on the neck when he hugged him during their reunion. This teaching goes as far as to say that Esau was trying to kill Jacob by biting him on the jugular vein in the neck. This teaching is entirely erroneous and based upon the conjectures of unlearned so-called teachers of Torah.

This teaching stems from a Gnostic mindset that is looking for hidden knowledge about Scripture. This teaching is permeating the body of Messiah because of itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3) and uneducated assumptions, and it will continue until the body of Messiah matures enough (Hebrews 5:14) to hold its teachers accountable by verifying what is being taught.

Acts 17:11 (TLV) 11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, because they received the message with goodwill, searching the Scriptures each day to see whether these things were true.

It’s time for the body of Messiah to grow up and put aside childish ways (1 Corinthians 13:11). It’s time to stand upon the Word of G-d and purge erroneous interpretations of Scripture. It’s time for the body of Messiah to hold teachers accountable and require the highest standards of biblical interpretation instead of readily accepting any and all teachings whether they are true or not.

Yeshua is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). If the teaching is not true then it is not the way, and it has no life. It’s only purpose is to draw people away from Yeshua. Don’t fall victim to this teaching, and at every opportunity point it out in the light of the Truth hoping to save others from slipping off of the narrow path that leads to Life.
