B’reisheet (בראשית “In the beginning”)

This week we began again the yearly Torah Portion reading cycle. B’reisheet, בראשית (“In the beginning”), is the first word of the most important verse in the Bible. The very first thing Adonai does is reveal himself to man.

“In the beginning God…”, In the beginning God reveals himself to be Creator, King, and God of the universe. This corresponds to the first of the 10 Commandments, “I am the Lord Your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”[1]. Again, the very first thing God does is reveal himself.

The very first thing God wants for us is that we know He exists, that he is the Creator of the universe, and that He wants to be our Savior.
