FALSE TEACHING: If it’s not in Torah, it’s not true.

There is a teaching going around in the Torah Observant movement, which states that if you can’t find it in Torah, then it’s not true or not of G-d. This teaching has led many people to abandon the Brit Hadasha (New Testament), the Ekklesia (church), and even Yeshua.

This teaching is rooted in a false narrative that all truth, in all its permutations, is in Torah, and that if you can’t find it in Torah (Written Torah, the first five books of the Tanakh), then it should not be accepted as truth. The notorious Flat Earth debate, which has taken the Torah Observant movement by storm, is rooted in this teaching, as well as many fringe group ideas and concepts that are digging away at the foundations laid by Yeshua and His Talmidim (disciples).

This teaching prays on people who do not know their Bibles or are not able to understand it. It completely dismisses literary criticism and dissection of scripture based on the style, audience, cultural, historical circumstance, and language of the original text. It also relies heavily upon ‘opinion poles’ which are propagated ad nauseam on Facebook and other social media. If you and your friends can’t find it in Torah yourself, then this false teaching dictates that it must not be true or of G-d and therefore, should be rejected.

Another thing this teaching plays upon is the idea that nobody needs a teacher because they have the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), which is, ironically, a New Testament concept, and that if the individual doesn’t understand or grasp the literary concept as being in-line with the foundation of Torah, then it must not be true. It relies on the idea that everybody can understand everything (with the Ruach). Teachers who G-d Himself has appointed to lead His people are being ignored, challenged, and smeared across Social Media because they don’t have a verse in Torah which the inquirer can understand that mentions some concept or idea and tells us if it is good or bad.

I can’t stress this enough: every truth can not be found condensed into a single, man-made, verse. Yet, this idea has propagated itself throughout the community. If the reader can’t find it in a verse (or two) without the help of a teacher, I might add, then it must be a falsehood.

Torah is the foundation by which the rest of the instructions G-d has given us has been built upon. Torah does not mention everything in life, and therefore can not address every topic. Torah is to the Bible as the Ten Commandments is to Torah. The Ten Commandments do not contain all of Torah, but Torah is built upon the foundations of the Ten Commandments. Torah, the Tanakh, and the Brit Hadasha do not contain every truth that the walking, talking, Torah, Yeshua, taught his disciples. The Bible is to Yeshua as Torah is to the Bible. The Bible lays a foundation by which all truth can be built, but all truth is not built upon it for us all to see. The Scriptures, all of them, are the boundaries and instructions by which we can live out our lives, but if you can’t understand why not buying a car in a color not mentioned in scripture is false teaching, then you, sir, need a teacher to help you understand, without which you will be pulled two and fro by every wind of false doctrine.

Ephesians 4:11-16 Tree of Life Version (TLV)

11 He Himself gave some to be emissaries, some as prophets, some as proclaimers of the Good News, and some as shepherds and teachers— 12 to equip the kedoshim for the work of service, for building up the body of Messiah. 13 This will continue until we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of Ben-Elohim—to mature adulthood, to the measure of the stature of Messiah’s fullness. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be like children, tossed around by the waves and blown all over by every wind of teaching, by the trickery of men with cunning in deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all ways into Messiah, who is the Head. 16 From Him the whole body is fitted and held together by every supporting ligament. The proper working of each individual part produces the body’s growth, for building itself up in love.
